Discover San Pedro and The Belize Barrier Reef

People always ask me about San Pedro, Belize, and honestly… It’s one of those places that just gets you. The vibe is easy, laid-back, and just plain fun—but what really keeps pulling me back is what’s just offshore. The Belize Barrier Reef is only minutes away by boat, and every time I head out, it feels like the adventure starts the moment I leave the dock.

Warm turquoise water, colorful reef, Green Sea Turtles lazily cruising by, Spotted Eagle Rays gliding through the water like a stealth aircraft, Caribbean Nurse Sharks, curious and FMO like my Golden Doodle, and those little underwater moments that make you stop and just grin into your regulator.

Above the surface, San Pedro has this relaxed Caribbean charm, golf carts instead of traffic jams, great little beach bars, fresh seafood, friendly locals, and that feeling that life has finally slowed down to the speed it should be.

For me, and what I try to share, isn’t about just booking another vacation - it’s about discovering a place that feels adventurous, authentic, and ridiculously easy to fall in love with.

Dive & Snorkel The Belize Barrier Reef

You don’t come to Belize for an ordinary dive—and you’re certainly not here to follow a crowd.

From San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, the Belize Barrier Reef is just minutes away. No long transits, no drawn-out buildup—just a smooth entry into an environment that immediately slows everything down.

And that’s where the difference is.

The real luxury here isn’t just the reef—it’s time. Time to settle into the dive, to become aware, to let the reef reveal itself the way it’s meant to. A turtle moving effortlessly through open water. Rays gliding across the sand. Schools of fish shifting over coral that feels almost architectural.

Belize has always offered exceptional diving.

The difference is in how you experience it—and when it’s done right, it’s not just another dive… It’s one you carry with you.

Frequently Asked Traveler Questions

Where is Belize?

Belize is a small, English-speaking tropical country in Central America, nestled between Mexico and Guatemala along the Caribbean Sea.

How do I get to Belize from Canada or the United States?

Getting to Belize is easier than many people think. Your international flight destination is Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) in Belize City. From there, we’ll help guide you the rest of the way to beautiful San Pedro, Ambergris Caye—your gateway to adventure.

Popular Canadian departure cities include:
✈️ Edmonton (YEG) – typically 1 stop, often through Calgary, Toronto, Houston, Dallas, or Denver
✈️ Calgary (YYC) – convenient one-stop options, often through Houston, Dallas, or Toronto
✈️ Toronto (YYZ) – direct seasonal flights are often available, plus connecting options year-round
✈️ Vancouver (YVR) – easy one-stop connections through major U.S. hubs

Popular U.S. departure cities include:
✈️ Houston (IAH) – one of the easiest and most frequent gateways to Belize
✈️ Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) – excellent direct connections
✈️ Miami (MIA) – frequent direct flights
✈️ Atlanta (ATL) – strong connection options
✈️ Denver (DEN) – convenient western U.S. routing
✈️ Charlotte (CLT) – good east coast access

What happens once I arrive in Belize?

Once you arrive at Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) in Belize City, a private driver will be waiting to greet you with your name on a sign, ready to assist with your transfer. From there, we take care of the logistics so your journey to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye is smooth, easy, and stress-free.

Can I speak with someone before I book or travel to Belize?

Absolutely. One of the advantages of booking with us is that you’re not dealing with an anonymous booking platform or call centre. You can speak directly with Larry Wedgewood, your personal travel host and travel coordinator, before you book and anytime throughout the planning process.

What currency is used in Belize?

Belize uses the Belize Dollar (BZD), which is pegged at a static 2 Belize dollars to 1 US dollar, making it easy to understand pricing.

How should I handle spending money?

US dollars are widely accepted throughout Belize, especially in San Pedro, restaurants, shops, and tourism-related businesses

Can I use credit cards or debit cards in Belize?

Yes—credit cards and debit cards are widely accepted in many places throughout Belize, especially in tourism areas like San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, including many hotels, restaurants, shops, and larger tour-related businesses.

Pro tip: Let your bank know you’re traveling before departure,

Can I access ATMs while in San Pedro?

Yes—ATMs are available in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, making it easy to withdraw cash if needed during your stay. The ATMs dispense Belize dollars (BZD), and many accept major international debit cards.

That said, it’s always a good idea to arrive with some US cash in smaller denominations for tips, small purchases, and places that may prefer cash.

Can I buy Belize dollars in Canada or the United States before I travel?

The safe answer is no, or don't count on it.

Belize dollars (BZD) are not commonly stocked by Canadian or U.S. banks as major currencies, so availability can be limited and exchange rates may not be ideal.

The good news is that US dollars are widely accepted throughout Belize, especially in tourism areas like San Pedro, making travel very easy.

If you decide you want Belize dollars, you can easily withdraw them from ATMs in San Pedro, which dispenses local currency.

Is Wi-Fi available in San Pedro, Belize?

Yes. Wi-Fi is widely available in San Pedro, including most hotels, resorts, vacation rentals, restaurants, cafés, and many tourism-related businesses. Staying connected for messaging, emails, browsing, and social media is generally easy.

In my experience in San Pedro it has been pretty good, allowing me to stream videos and to video chat online.

How reliable is Wi-Fi in Belize?

Wi-Fi in Belize is generally reliable in tourism areas like San Pedro, but keep in mind you’re on an island, so speeds and consistency may vary compared to what you’re used to at home. For everyday communication, trip planning, social media, and light work, it’s usually more than adequate.

Can I use my Canadian or U.S. cell phone in Belize?

Yes, in most cases your phone will work in Belize if your provider allows international roaming. Before you travel, check with your carrier to confirm Belize coverage and roaming rates, as charges can add up quickly without a travel package.

Personally I take the SIM card out of my phone, (so I don't accidently run up charges) then I use Whatapp on wifi everywhere I go)

Can I get a SIM card for Belize?

Yes, you can easily get a SIM card for Belize to avoid high roaming fees. The best options are buying a local DigiCell (formerly BTL) or SMART prepaid SIM card upon arrival at the airport or in town, or purchasing an eSIM (like Airalo) online before you travel for instant connectivity.

Required Documents: You will need your passport to register the SIM card, as it is required by local regulations.

Costs: Prepaid SIM cards are relatively inexpensive, with tourist packages often costing around $20 BZD (approx. $10 USD), including data.

eSIM Option: 1–2 Days Before Departure: Purchase your eSIM online. Most providers, like Airalo or Holafly, will email you a QR code within minutes.

Will my mobile phone work in Belize?

Most modern smartphones will work in Belize, either through your home provider’s roaming service or by using a local SIM card or eSIM option.

Ambergris Hope Hospital – a 24-hour private hospital in San Pedro

Is there medical care for diving-related accidents in Belize?

* On my hosted trips I take my guests for a tour of the facility.
